When a piece should be remade rather than repaired

This is the part of the work we care most about. A ring sized four times over, worn thin at the back, with prongs down to almost nothing, can certainly be patched. It will look lovely leaving the bench and it will fail again — usually by losing the very stone that mattered.

We believe that if something cannot be repaired properly, it should be remade in a way that honors what it originally was. That is a harder thing to say than to quote a repair, and it is the kinder thing. The alternative is charging someone for work we know will not hold, on a piece that cannot be replaced.

Not everything falls into that category, of course. Plenty of inherited jewelry needs nothing more than careful restoration — retipping, a new shank, a proper polish. You’ll always be told which it is before anything begins.

Questions

Will I lose the original piece?

Sometimes, and that is entirely your choice. We photograph and document everything prior to sending it to our team to make sure nothing is disturbed before your approval.

Can the original gold be kept in the new piece?

Yes. We offer a special casting refining process that retains the original gold or platinum within the new piece — something we suggest often for anyone especially attached to where it came from.

How do I know whether to repair or remake?

Condition decides it. If a shank has been sized many times, or the metal has grown porous, or the prongs have worn thin, a repair is a temporary kindness on a piece that will fail again. We’ll tell you gently which situation you are in.

Can old stones be reused?

Almost always. Older cuts are examined for chips along the girdle first, and some need polishing or in extreme cases recutting. That’s all assessed before you commit to anything.
